Ligament Disorders Q & A

What are ligaments?

Ligaments are tough cords of connective tissue that connect bone to bone at a joint. Ligaments support joints, particularly your knees, shoulders, elbows, and ankles, and keep them from being overly mobile.

Damage to ligaments can occur during sports play or an accident. Some disorders affect your ligaments’ integrity, too. These include Marfan syndrome and osteogenesis imperfecta, which is characterized by lax ligaments, brittle bones, and low muscle mass. Regenerative medicine practices help heal this connective tissue if it suffers disease or injury.

What are ligament disorders?

Ligament disorders include conditions in which a chronic disease or autoimmune problem affects the connective tissue. Your connective tissue, including the ligaments, is made up of collagen and elastin. These two proteins are found in ligaments, tendons, skin, and bone, as well as other tissue.

Elastin gives tissue its stretchiness and is a major component of ligaments. Collagen gives skin and tissues strength and resilience.

Ligament disorders, or any connective tissue disorder, occur when these proteins are inflamed. Localized inflammation occurs after an injury, or you may have widespread inflammation due to disease.

How are ligament disorders treated?

Traditional treatments for ligament disorders are rest, physical therapy, oral supplements, and — in severe cases — surgery.

When conservative treatments fail to bring your relief, Dr. Amin offers regenerative medicine treatments. These include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and stem cell injections that harness your body’s ability to heal itself.

PRP injections

PRP is acquired from a sample of your own blood. After a conventional blood draw, Dr. Amin spins your blood in a centrifuge.

This process concentrates the platelet count. Platelets help your blood clot and offer tremendous healing and growth factors.

When injected into a ligament, your body steps up its healing capacities to help build new tissue and reduce inflammation.

Stem cell injections

Stem cells also induce self-healing. These specialized cells have the ability to become any type of cell your body needs at a given time.

As you get older, the amount of stem cells in your body decreases and healing is compromised. Stem cell injections reboot your supply so you heal faster and more effectively.

Regenerative medicine strategies can delay or prevent the need for surgery, making them a revolutionary approach to healing.
